- He graduated from the Experimental School of the University of Athens (1957-1969) and the Civil Engineer
School of the National Technical University of Athens.

Parliamentary Activities
• President of the Hellenic Parliament during the 19th Parliamentary Term (October 2015 – July 2019).
• He served as Minister of Interior and Administrative Reorganisation in the first SYRIZA-ANEL government (January – August 2015) under Prime
Minister Alexis Tsipras.
• He was elected MP for SYRIZA in the 1st Constituency of Athens from May 2012 to May 2023. He served as Secretary of the SYRIZA Parliamentary
Group from June 2012 to December 2014.
• During his tenure as President of the Parliament, he served as President of the Conference of Presidents of the Parliament, President of the
Hellenic Parliament Foundation on Parliamentarism and Democracy and as Chairman of the Committee on the Standing Orders of the Parliament.
• While he served as an MP, he was a member of the Special Permanent Committee on Institutions & Transparency, a member of the Standing
Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice, the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs, the Committee on
state-owned enterprises, banks, public utility enterprises and social security agencies and of the Inquiry Committee looking into the wire-tapping
scandal.
Political/Social Activities
• In the local administration elections of 2010 he was elected regional councillor for Attica in the Central Sector with the bloc “Attica Cooperation
– No to the Memorandum”.
• He participated in the massive student anti-dictatorship movement (1970 – 1974) as a member of the Student Struggle Committees of the
National Technical University of Athens. He was elected Vice-President of the first post-dictatorship Council of the National Student Association of
Greece in 1975, which resulted from the convocation of the National Council of which he was a member of the Bureau.
• He was Secretary of the Central Coundil of the Greek Communist Youth Organisation Rigas Feraios for two terms (1980 – 1985). He was a
member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (Interior) – Renewal Left (1987 – 1991). He joined the Coalition of the Left
and Progress after the 1993 elections and was elected to the Political Secretariat. He was Head of the Press Office of the Coalition from 2001 to
2006. He was also a member of the SYRIZA Central Committee since its founding and stood as a candidate for the party from 2004 to 2023.
• He is a member of New Left since its founding, after making the decision to leave SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance on 10 November 2023 with a
public political statement.
