Vassilios V. Digalakis was born in Chania in 1963.
Marital Status:
He is married and father of two.

He received the Diploma in EE from the National Technical University of Athens in 1986 and the PhD degree in electrical and systems engineering from Boston University, in 1992. His research interests are in machine learning, pattern and speech recognition, speech processing, multimodal interfaces and dialog systems.

Parliamentary Activities

Chairman of the Standing Committee on Cultural and Educational Affairs.
In July 2019, he was appointed as Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs responsible for Higher Education, and served until January 2021.
He was elected as MP in Chania with the New Democracy party in the July 2019 national elections.

Political/Social Activities

From 1992 to 1995 he was with the Speech Technology and Research Laboratory of SRI International in Menlo Park, CA where he served as a member of the senior staff and principal investigator for ARPA research contracts. At SRI he developed algorithms for the DECIPHER speech recognition system.
Since 1995, he is a Professor in the department of Electrical and Computer engineering of the Technical University of Crete (TUC) in Chania. From September 2003 to August 2005, he served as the Chairman of the ECE Department. From September 2005 to March 2013 he was the Director of the Telecommunications Systems Institute of the Technical University of Crete.
From April 2013 to November 2017, he was the Rector of the Technical University of Crete. From January 2015 to September 2015 he served as President of the Hellenic Universities Rectors’ Synod. His work at the Technical University of Crete focused on the establishment of outreach activities, the promotion and rewarding of excellence and the sustainable development of the University. He launched a number of major infrastructure projects, made significant efforts to utilize the university’s property and completed successfully the tender for the restoration of TUC’s historic buildings in the Old Town of Chania.
