Meeting of Working Group of Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol

Mr. Konstantinos Karagounis, MP and a member of the Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice and of the Hellenic Parliament delegation in the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group (JPSG) on the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) participated via teleconference in a Working Group on the revision of the JPSG's rules of procedure.

Mr. Karagounis in his intervention voiced his support for maintaining the principle of decision-making by unanimity, stressing that unanimity reflects the very essence and basis of interparliamentary cooperation. He noted that the Rules of Procedure constitute the “identity” and the “JPSG road map”, therefore its revision should serve the intended purpose, and proposed a 12-month term of office for the JPSG representative to the Europol Management Board, claiming that this duration allows the representative to acquire a good understanding of the subject and to provide comprehensive briefings to the JPSG.

Europol was launched in 1999 and assists national law enforcement agencies in fighting serious international crime and terrorism.
