Online meeting of Chairman of National Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee of Hellenic Parliament with Chairman of Foreign Policy Committee of Parliament of Denmark

The Chairman of the National Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hellenic Parliament Konstantinos Gioulekas met with the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Danish Parliament Martin Lidegaard on Wednesday 15 December in the framework of strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the Hellenic Parliament and Parliaments of EU member states.

Mr Gioulekas emphasised the need to strengthen ties and cooperation within the European family, especially on issues of foreign policy, as well as in the face of common challenges member states are up against. At the same time, he focused on the challenge of the migrant-refugee issue, noting that it should be resolved on the basis of the principles of solidarity and fair burden and responsibility sharing. Then he referred to Turkey's provocative stance in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean, which is using this stance to question international treaties and violate International Law and the Law of the Sea, pointing out that Greece wishes to resolve the only difference between the two countries, ie the delimitation of the continental shelf and the EEZ, through an honest dialogue.

For his part, Mr Lidegaard said that Denmark shares Greece's concerns about Turkey and expressed the conviction that Turkey's close cooperation with Europe could lead to positive results. Regarding the migrant-refugee problem, the Danish former Foreign Minister said that he fully understands the burden that the Mediterranean societies carry and added that there should be a common policy on border protection and the equal distribution of refugees among member states.
