Meeting of Chairman of Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of Hellenic Parliament with delegation from Defence and Security Committee of Federation Council of Russian Federation

The Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament Konstantinos Gioulekas met with members of the Defence and Security Committee of the Federation Council (upper chamber) of the Russian Federation visiting the Hellenic Parliament.
The Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs referred to the historical relations between the two countries, especially Russia’s contribution to the Greek Revolution, noting the presence of Greeks of the diaspora as a vital factor for the friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples.
Among other things, Mr. Gioulekas emphasised that our country does not accept the unilateral and provocative claims raised by Turkey, as demonstrated by its recent illegal actions in the occupied territories in Cyprus, as these contravene International Law. As he underlined, such acts scuttle stability, peace and security.
For his part, the Chairman of the Defence and Security Committee of the Federation Council Viktor Bondarev referred to developments in Ukraine, condemning any form of terrorism on a global scale.
Both sides stressed that they look forward to strengthening and improving bilateral relations at parliamentary level, as well as to expanding cooperation in the economic, scientific and cultural sectors. They also referred to tourism, pointing out the large number of Russian citizens visiting our country, and to possibilities to further increase visits.
