“Western Balkans: Between multipolarism and the European integration process” was the theme of the inter-parliamentary online workshop which took place following an initiative by the Foreign and European Community Affairs of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by the Secretary of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs, Anastasios Chatzivasileiou. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Luigi Di Maio and the Neighbourhood and Enlargement Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, participated in the workshop.
In his intervention Mr. Chatzivasileiou mentioned that Greece actively participates and plays a leading role in the European integration of the Western Balkans since the Thessaloniki Summit of 2003 and pointed out that it has been the firm position of our country that the future of the region lies within a stable, strong and united Europe, under the strict conditions set by the accession process. The Greek MP stressed that the European principles and mutual respect between states must be fully observed. Mr. Chatzivasileiou underlined that in times of increasing global challenges and divisions, the prospect of the full accession of the Western Balkans to the EU is to the political and economic benefit of the Union.
