Meeting of National Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman with Philos Project Delegation
The Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament Konstantinos Gioulekas met with Philos Project representatives, Robert Nicholson, Luke Moon and Mariam Wahba. Endy Zemenides, one of the most important members of the Greek diaspora in the US and CEO of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), also participated in the meeting.
The mission of Philos Project is to promote the coexistence of different religions in countries of the Middle East, emphasising the protection of the Christian communities there residing.
During the meeting, Mr Gioulekas referred to the close ties of the people of Greece and the US, ties that were established when consecutive waves of Greek immigrants settled and were integrated in the US, but also because the two countries have been and continue to be "on the same side of history". He stressed the need to protect Christian populations in the Middle East and demonstrated, using an array of historical examples, the respect that Greece has always shown to the presence of other religious doctrines in its territory.
For his part, Mr Zemenides and the Philos Project representatives expressed their thoughts and presented their initiatives on how to protect Christian populations and monuments in the wider region of the Middle East.
