Hellenic Parliament represented Meeting of Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol

The Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol 12th Meeting concluded today in Stockholm; Mr Konstantinos Karagounis, a member of the Hellenic Parliament Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice participated actively in the meeting.

Mrs Ylva Johansson, Swedish Commissioner responsible for EU home affairs, was the keynote speaker at the meeting, and focused mainly on the new Regulation for Combating Child Sexual Abuse.

Mr Karagounis expressed his support to all  EU- level initiatives aimed at combating organised crime, money laundering and terrorist financing.  More specifically, he pointed out that the field of financial transactions is of crucial importance for revealing criminal activities, also for crime deterrence and for preventing its infiltration into the economy and society. In this framework, he stressed the importance of the EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority, characterising it as an ambitious step in the fight against organised crime. The Commissioner fully shared his position.

He also referred to the eradication of trafficking in human beings, characterising it as a long-term process requiring to address the root causes and also to pursue the dismantling of criminal networks. Action against human trafficking - the MP argued - is a political priority both at the national and international level and calls for multi-level cooperation of all relevant agencies and organisations.

He also emphasized that the competent services of the Greek Police are in a constant state of vigilance, in the light of the new state of affairs shaped by the current situation in Ukraine, specifically aiming at the immediate identification of potential victims of human trafficking coming from Ukraine and providing them with the necessary assistance and protection.
