Meeting of Chair and Deputy Chair of Committee on Hellenism of Diaspora with delegation from American Hellenic Institute (AHI)

The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary committee on Hellenism of the Diaspora Savvas Anastasiadis and Andreas Michailidis met today with the President of the American Hellenic Institute Nick Larigakis and a group of nine Greek-American students in the framework of the AHI’s student trip to Greece and Cyprus.

The two MPs briefed Mr. Larigakis and the students on the work of the Committee, referred to aspects of bilateral relations between Greece and the US, lately at an excellent level, urged the students to keep learning the Greek language, which is key in trying to understand and connect with Greek culture and their country of origin, referred to the recent unanimous proposal by the Committee for a Hellenism of the Diaspora Day and suggested to Mr. Larigakis to hold in the near future a joint meeting of all members of the Committee with the AHI.

The students focused on the experience of the student trip, on obtaining a more complete picture of Greek national issues through their conversations with representatives of the government and other officials of the Greek State, while special reference was made to how they experience their Greek identity in the US.

For his part, Mr. Larigakis referred to the multifaceted action of the AHI in terms of promoting issues of Greek interest, while also describing the situation of the Greek diaspora in the US, as it has developed over the years, but also in light of recent political developments in the two countries.
