Participation of Hellenic Parliament delegation in Parliamentary Conference on legislation and policy-making for new generation of Europe
Mrs Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Chair of the Hellenic Parliament Committee on Environment and Mr Kostas Zachariadis participated in a Conference for young parliamentarians organised by the Parliament of Albania, from 19 to 21 September 2022.
Mrs Avgerinopoulou briefed participating MPs on our country’s series of important initiatives ranging throughout the whole spectrum of the economy, which aim to reduce greenhouse emissions by at least 55% by 2030. She pinpointed the concept of green islands that operate exclusively with 100% renewable energy sources and produce zero waste, such as Tilos, which is the first "green" island in the Mediterranean. She also emphasized Greece’s commitment for becoming a pioneer in offshore wind power and electro-mobility.
Mr Zachariadis discussed the issue of climate change and its expected impact on coming generations, as living standards and social cohesion are inextricably linked to natural environment quality. He also stressed parliamentarians’ duty and responsibility to implement environmental laws and spread environmental awareness in society, as combatting climate change calls for stronger commitment, justice and solidarity.
On the sidelines of the Conference, the two Greek MPs held a series of bilateral contacts with the Minister of Tourism and Environment of Albania, Mrs Mirela Kumbaro, the Chair of the Albanian Parliament Production, Trade and Environment Committee, Mr Arben Pellumbi, the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania, Anastasios, as well as with members of Albania‘s Greek Business Association.
