Meeting of Chairman of National Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee with new UK Ambassador
The Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament Konstantinos Gioulekas met with the new UK Ambassador in Athens Matthew Lodge.
During the meeting, the traditionally close relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries were confirmed, relations with an important historical dimension, from the Struggle for Greek Independence to the two World Wars and recent Greek history.
The two sides held an extensive discussion on the problems in the Eastern Mediterranean, the migration issue, the Cyprus issue and overall on the problems around the implementation of the Law of the Sea.
Special reference was made to the critical period of the UK withdrawal process from the EU, and to the issue of re-examining the tuition fees of Greek students studying in Britain.
Both sides acknowledged that the exit of the UK from the EU does under no means signify a deterioration of relations with Greece, quite the contrary, it is an opportunity for closer, deeper and more honest bilateral relations, considering also the large number of Greeks living and working in the UK.
