Western European Union (WEU) Parliamentary Assembly
The WEU was founded in 1954 when the 1948 Treaty of Brussels on European security and defense cooperation was revised to allow for its establishment.
The Treaty is binding for countries that are WEU Council members and which should inform, by means of an annual report, members of their national parliaments who participate in the WEU, about government activities and actions on defense and security.
The Assembly, based in Paris, examines and supports intergovernmental activities in all areas of European security and defense including cooperation on defense equipment at a European level. Following the transfer of WEU operational activities to the EU, the Assembly focuses mainly on scrutinizing ESDP (EU’s European Security and Defense Policy) while following up on the implications of WEU’s collective defense commitment under Article V of the modified Brussels Treaty.
There are 39 European countries that have the right to parliamentary representation to the Organization, including all EU member-states and European NATO members, as well as members of 15 parliaments with associate, partner or observer status. Currently the Assembly consists of 400 representatives and substitutes.
The Plenum meets twice a year. The Greek parliamentarian delegation, identical to the one that takes part in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) meetings, attends both plenary sessions, which are held at the HQ in Paris, and Committee sittings.
