Political/Social Activities
Since 1985 he has worked as a teacher in Kalamaria.
Since 1996 he has been a member of trade unions of teachers and civil servants.
He was first elected Member of Parliament in the national elections of 17 June 2012 and was re-elected
with the SYRIZA in the first constituency of Thessaloniki in the elections of January 25, 2015.
He was chairman of the Special Standing Committee on Hellenism of Diaspora, a member of the Standing
Committee on Education and the Special Standing Committee on Research and Technology, as well as the
head of the Parliamentary Group on Religions.
Until July 2016 he held the position of Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of
Orthodoxy, a global body whose purpose is to encourage contacts between parliamentary, political,
ecclesiastical, academic, and spiritual figures or institutions.
On July 17, 2015, he was assigned the portfolio of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, held until August
31, 2018. He was responsible for the Department of Religious and Cultural Diplomacy of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and its subordinate administrations.
