Parliamentary Activities
Elected for the first time as an MP with New Democracy for the constituency of Lasithi in 2004 and has 
been a member of the Hellenic 
Parliament since. From September 2007 and up to the October 2009 elections, held the position of Deputy 
Minister of National Defence, in 
charge of the Armed Forces infrastructure projects, meteorology and military sports. In June 2014, he was 
appointed Deputy Minister of 
Labour, Social Security and Welfare in charge of managing the European Social Fund and the EU 
employment programmes. He held this post 
until the January 2015 elections. In July 2019 he assumed the duties of Minister of Maritime Affairs and 
Insular Policy, and has been the 
longest-serving Minister of Maritime Affairs since the restoration of Democracy. In July 2023 he was 
elected 1st Vice-President of the 
Hellenic Parliament with an increased majority of 269 votes. 
He has served on the Hellenic Parliament’s Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs 
and the Standing Committee on 
Production and Trade, the Standing Committee on Social Affairs and the Special Permanent Committee on 
Equality, Youth and Human 
Rights.
Political/Social Activities
In the municipal elections of 1998, he was elected municipal councilor for the municipality of Sitia, where 
he served until 2002. 
Around the same time, in January 2001, he was appointed member of the New Democracy Committee for 
Tourism. 
In 2009, he was appointed Head of New Democracy for Merchant Marine and Insular Policy. In the 2010 
regional elections, he 
was the leading candidate for New Democracy in Crete. 
From 2012 to 2014, he was a member of the Greek delegation to the Organisation for Security and 
Cooperation in Europe 
(OSCE).
He was a member in the Greek delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. 
From December 2016, upon recommendation by New Democracy Leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, he 
participated as a member in the 
Evaluation Committee for the party’s electoral candidates and, at the same time, was appointed Head of 
New Democracy for 
Maritime Affairs and Insular policy.
