Parliamentary Activities
She was elected a KKE member of the Parliament in the 2nd Constituency of Athens, in the elections in 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2009.
Political/Social Activities
She worked as an employee in some businesses accounts for 8 years; at the same time she gave private lessons.
In 1961 she participated in the Peace Movement and in the students’ organization of Labrakis Youth, in High School. Thus she took active part in a number of High School and University students’ demonstrations.
She was a leading member in the Panathinaeki students’ organization, which was founded during the students’ struggles.
She was a member of the bureau of the youth organization of EDA; a secretary and a member of the Students’ bureau of the Labrakis Democratic Youth organization.
In 1968, during the dictatorship, she became a member of KKE (Communist Party of Greece) and she participated in the movement of the families of the political prisoners.
She was arrested by the junta regime and kept in prison for four months.
In 1974, she became a member of the Bureau of the Regional Committee of the Party Organization of Athens; subsequently, she took action in the women’s movement.
She was among the founder members of the Greek Women Federation (OGE). She participated in the organization of events regarding the International Year of Woman; moreover, she participated – until 1981 – in international conferences of the World Federation of Democratic Women, of the U.N. in international theoretical meetings etc.
In 1978, she was elected a member of the Central Committee of the party, by the 10th Congress of KKE; in 1986 she was elected a member of the Political Bureau.
On 27.2.1991, in the 13th Congress of KKE, she was elected the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the party; she was unanimously reelected in this post in the 15th Congress of KKE (26.5.1996). She is the first woman who has taken on the office of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of KKE.
She has written a book about the emancipation and the liberation of women.
