Political/Social Activities

With a 12.5-year term, he is the longest-serving Mayor in the history of the Municipality of Katerini, having broken the relevant record of Simos Charalambides, who had remained Mayor from May 1975 until December 31, 1986, in an 11-year and 7-month term.
He has been President of the Local Union of Municipalities & Communities (TEDK) of the Prefecture of Pieria, a member of the Board of the Regional Union of Municipalities (PED) of the Region of Central Macedonia, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE).
As a Chairman of the Committee on Spatial Planning, Infrastructure and Environment Savvas Chionidis led some flagship initiatives for local government and development, such as:
- Thematic Conference on "Solid Waste Management Models and the Role of Local Government Organizations - Assessment of Spatial, Population and Economic Parameters », held in January 2016 in Alexandroupolis,
- Thematic Conference on "Climate Change: Its Impact on the Economy and Management Policies in the Sectors: Energy, Waste, Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources Management, Tourism and Health", held in April 2017 in Heraklion,
- 28th Congress of the PANDOIKO Network of Ecological Organizations on "Climate Change. Urban Environment”, held in November 2018 in Katerini.
During his high school and college years he participated in the volleyball and track team of Archelaus Katerini, as well as in the dance section of the Katerini Pierides Mouses.
He has been a member of the Prefectural Tourism Promotion Committee of Pieria since its establishment. His most notable task is the compensation of tourist accommodation of an amount of $ 3 billion Greek Drahmas in the Prefecture of Pieria for damage caused by the Kosovo war, as chief rapporteur at the Ministry of Economy and EOMMEX.
