At age 10 he was blinded from the explosion of a German hand-grenade, a remnant of WW2. Shortly after he decided that he would not allow his fate to prevail upon him.
Since 1974 he has taken part in student and popular struggles. During the period 1976-1981 he pioneered a social “uprising” of the blind, whose demands were the right to education and dignity and the enshrinement of their social rights. He clashed with the reactionary mechanisms of the state, the church and the managers of charity and was prosecuted.
He is a founding member of the World and European Blind Unions and founder of the National Confederation of People with Disabilities. Between 1993 and 1996 he served as General Secretary for Welfare in the Health Ministry and produced significant work in the areas of children protection, care for the elderly and people with disabilities.
He is the first Greek blind MP and one out of only two in the EU. He has been honored several times for his social achievements in Greece and abroad. In 2006 he received an honorary award from the Academy of Athens in recognition of his social and political struggles.
