The tragic story of a teenage geisha, nicknamed Butterfly, in early 20th century Japan. Falling in love with Pinkerton, an opportunist American naval officer, she marries him. She secretly converts to Christianity, but her family finds out and denounces her. Pinkerton leaves her and, three years later, comes back to claim their son. Butterfly has only one way to save her dignity: commit sepuku.
