Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC)

The 70th Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) concludes today in Madrid. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by the 1st Vice-President of the Parliament and Chair of the Committee on European Affairs Ioannis Plakiotakis, the Deputy Chair of the Committee Rena Dourou and members Dimitris Kouvelas and Stefanos Parastatidis.
In the opening session regarding the assessment of the Spanish Presidency, during the first day of the proceedings, Mr Plakiotakis welcomed the efforts of the Spanish Presidency to promote legislative initiatives that favour the development of strategic industries in Europe, as well as the EU's long-term strategy to tackle climate change. In fact, he called for the intervention of the EU, to mitigate the effects of the recent devastating floods in order to ensure the continuation of agricultural production and food supply. Responding to Mr Plakiotakis, Mr Pascual Navarro, Secretary of State for the European Union of Spain, noted that the increase in European funding for natural disasters will be discussed at the European Council meeting in December, in the context of the negotiation for the revision of the Multiannual financial framework (MFF), recognising its importance especially for the Mediterranean countries and for the EU as a whole.
Concluding his intervention, the Vice-President of the Parliament asked for the support of the Body in the efforts of our country and of the Greek Prime Minister for the return of the Parthenon sculptures to their natural environment and the modern Acropolis Museum.
