Parliament illuminated to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Participating in the global events held for the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, the Hellenic Parliament projected on the Parliament building façade the #WEREMEMBER logo of the international information campaign in Memory of the Holocaust.

Earlier today, the Parliament Plenary session started with a commemoration of the "Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust", followed by a minute of silence.

In these ways, the Hellenic Parliament aims to preserve historical remembrance, honouring the millions of Holocaust victims and reminding the need for constant vigilance and alertness towards the defence of human rights and democratic values.

In January 2004, the Hellenic Parliament established by unanimous decision the 27th of January as a day of remembrance and honour for Greek Jews who lost their lives in Nazi concentration camps, while the following year, the UN General Assembly designated that date as the "International Holocaust Remembrance Day". The date was chosen to mark the liberation of  the largest concentration and extermination camp of the Nazi regime, namely, Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland on 27 January 1945,  by the Soviet troops .
