President of Parliament: "An important day for the Greek Parliament the election of Theodoros Rousopoulos as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)"

The President of the Hellenic Parliament, Constantine Tassoulas announced today at the Plenary Session of the Parliament the election of the Member of Parliament Theodoros Rousopoulos, as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, an announcement that was greeted with applause by the attending party representatives.

As Mr Tassoulas stressed, today "is an important day for the national Parliament" as "for the first time a Greek politician was elected unanimously to this very important international office, as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe - the oldest and most prominent international organisation - which has as its goal the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law".

The President of the Parliament, representing the Body, warmly congratulated Mr Rousopoulos, wishing him success in his work, "which promotes parliamentarianism and the image of Greece abroad", stressing that "we are not used to holding such important international offices".
