Meeting of Chair of Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs with Ambassador of Pakistan
The Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament Dora Bakoyannis held today at her office in the Parliament a formal meeting with the Ambassador of Pakistan in Athens Muhammad Aamar Aftab Qureshi.
During the meeting, which was held in a warm atmosphere, Mrs Bakoyannis referred to the entire network of bilateral relations between Greece and Pakistan, noting that there is scope to improve cooperation in many areas, particularly in the field of trade, since our country now offers an environment with prospects for stability and economic growth.
Regarding the issue of migration, Mrs Bakoyannis stressed the importance that both Greece and the European Union attach to managing illegal flows. In this spirit, our country is willing to cooperate with Pakistan towards the signing of a Memorandum that will regulate legal migration, always in line with the protection of human rights, expecting from Pakistan constructive cooperation in the management of returns.
Ambassador Qureshi presented to Mrs Bakoyannis aspects of the current situation in Pakistan, with particular reference to the political situation with the upcoming elections, the economy and the acts of terrorism in his country and in the wider region.
During the meeting, both sides confirmed their will to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Greece and Pakistan, and agreed to strengthen parliamentary relations between the two countries in a way that will be beneficial for both peoples.
