Ioannis Plakiotakis: "Greece expresses its unwavering support to the Ukrainian people"
The 1st Vice-President of the Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis represented the President of the Parliament at the 2nd Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform.
The Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament during his intervention at the Summit emphasised the principled position that Crimea is an unalienable part of Ukraine and reaffirmed the unwavering support to the Ukrainian people and the country that Greece, in the context of solidarity along with its partners and allies, is committed to sustain. Furthermore, he expressed the need for all to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine in the context of preparing its post-war future that will include its accession to the EU. The Greek official also referred to the extremely alarming recent situation in the Middle East, and the adverse impact it entails for the wider region, as well as the unavoidable humanitarian crisis that will affect the global community.
A Joint Declaration was adopted at the Summit which was attended by Speakers and representatives of 50 parliamentary bodies and international organisations from Europe, the US, Canada, countries of the Caucasus region and the Balkans, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand. The Presidents of the Parliamentary Assemblies of the Council of Europe, NATO, the OSCE, the IPU and ASEAN also addressed the Summit.
Bilateral contacts
On the sidelines of the Summit, the 1st Vice-President of the Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis met briefly with the Vice-President of the Parliament of Georgia Archil Talakvadze upon the latter's request. During this meeting and in the spirit of the ties of friendship and cooperation that link the two countries, a point of reference being the Greek national minority in Georgia as well as the numerous Georgian diaspora in Greece, Mr Plakiotakis expressed our country's firm support to Georgia's efforts to become an EU member. To this end, the Greek Vice-Presient noted the need for Georgia to be aligned with the EU decisions and statements in the field of foreign policy, especially the ones that pertain to the respect for territorial integrity, national sovereignty and the sovereign rights of EU member states.
