Meeting of 1st Vice President of Parliament with delegation of Estonian Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs
The 1st Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis met today with a delegation from the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament in the framework of a two-day visit to Athens.
The two sides had the opportunity to exchange views on issues concerning current affairs, as well as the economic and political relations between the two countries.
Mr Plakiotakis expressed his concern regarding the tensions in the immediate and wider region of Europe and stressed that Greece and Estonia, as countries that act based on the principles of international law, must stand by those countries that are fighting for their territorial integrity. He expressed his concern about the increased migration flows to Europe, while stressing that the instrumentalisation of people by third countries for their own political and economic gains is not acceptable. He added that in recent years, the focus of attention has been disproportionately on the responsibilities of first-admission member states, an issue that he himself addressed as Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy between 2019 and 2023, underlining that all EU member states should contribute to the management of migration in a fair and equitable manner.
With regard to the economic and trade relations between Greece and Estonia, the two sides expressed their satisfaction with the steady development, while they agreed that there is considerable room for further development. Particular mention was made of the contribution of Estonia to the digitisation and integration of new technologies in Public Administration and respectively of the contribution of the Greek maritime sector to energy and food security.
