Online meeting of Chair of Greece-Georgia Parliamentary Friendship Group with Chair of Georgia-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group

On the occasion of the 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Greece and Georgia, an online meeting was held today between the Chairman of the Greece-Georgia Parliamentary Friendshi Group Dimitris Kouvelas and the Chairman of the Georgia-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group Givi Mikanazde. The member of the Committee on Georgia's accession to the EU Maka Botchorishvili also participated in the online meeting.

During the meeting, Mr Kouvelas referred to the long-standing relations between the two countries, based on strong links of history, friendship and mutual respect. On this foundation, he said, we are continuing a constructive cooperation, while at the same time strengthening bilateral dialogue. Lastly, the Greek MP pointed out that Greece remains an unwavering supporter of Georgia's cooperation with the Euro-Atlantic institutions and the application for accession to the EU, however, he said, the European perspective is linked primarily to progress in the necessary reforms.

The Chairman of the Georgia-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group Givi Mikanazde expressed his gratitude over the support by the Greek side to his country's efforts to become a member of NATO and the European family. He also stated that Georgia's strong political will to further cooperate with the EU is actively proven by the unhindered implementation of the legislative work resulting from the Association Agreement and the EU accession application. Lastly, Mr Mikanazde asked for the accession prospect to be recognised since his country is a reliable and pro-European EU partner in the framework of the Eastern Partnership, as it has adopted legislation for the harmonisation with the European acquis.

At the same time, the two sides expressed the mutual desire to increase exchanges of visits both at the diplomatic level as well as at the level of cultural activities.
