First Part of 2024 Ordinary Session of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) - Candidacy of Th. Rousopoulos for PACE Presidency

The 1st Part of the 2024 Ordinary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will take place from Monday 22/01 to Friday 26/01 in Strasbourg. The following MPs, members of the Greek delegation to the PACE will participate: Dora Bakoyannis (Head of delegation), Evripidis Stylianidis, Theodoros Rousopoulos, Maria Syrengela, George Papandreou, Ioannis Economou, Georgios Stamatis, Anna Efthymiou, Anastasios Chatzivasileiou and Dimitrios Mantzos. 

The Secretary General of the Parliament, George Mylonakis will follow the proceedings. 

At the upcoming Session, the Assembly will elect its new President. The candidate is the MP and member of the Greek delegation, Theodoros Rousopoulos.

The following important reports will then be discussed and adopted:

-The theme of migration and asylum in election campaigns and the consequences on the welcoming and rights of migrants

-Globalisation in times of crisis and war: the role of the OECD since the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine

-Countering SLAPPs: an imperative for a democratic society

-Allegations of systemic torture and inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment in places of detention in Europe

-Child abuse in institutions in Europe

-Guaranteeing media freedom and the safety of journalists: an obligation of member states

-The progress of the Assembly's monitoring procedure

-Recent developments in the Middle East: Hama's terrorist attack on Israel and Israel's response

-A democratic future for Belarus

A request has also been submitted for a current affairs debate on the situation of the children of Ukraine.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, the President of Liechtenstein, Daniel Risch and the CoE Secretary General, Marija Pejčinović Burić will address the parliamentarians and take questions.
