30th Anniversary General Assembly of Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Halkidiki 29 June - 2 July 2023
The work of the 30th anniversary General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthoodoxy (IAO) concluded with the adoption of a Declaration and the election of the leadership. The 30th anniversary General Assembly took place in Halkidiki (29/6 - 27/7), where the international institution of Orthodox MPs was founded 30 years ago. The Seat of the Organisation is at the Hellenic Parliament.
In the context of the event, the rich activities of the Organisation's 30 years were retrospectively presented and the Secretary General Maximos Charakopoulos presented a detailed account of the previous GA in Crete, while the members unanimously agreed on the scheduled plans for the near future.
19 parliaments from the following countries were represented at the Assembly: Egypt, Ethiopia, Albania, Armenia, North Macedonia, Boznia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Jordan, Iran, Cyprus, Hungary, Uganda, Palestine, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Sudan.
Elections were held for the International Secretariat, with the Hellenic Parliament MP, Dr. Maximos Charakopoulos elected anew to the position of IAO Secretary General. The Polish MP Eugeniusz Czykwin was elected President of the institution's General Assembly, replacing the former President, member of the Russian Duma Sergei Gavrilov.
The Assembly adopted a Declaration put forward by the IAO SG, in which, among other things, any kind of occupation, invasion and conflict, any kind of threat and use of violence that has caused a humanitarian crisis, is denounced, while the warring parties are called to de-escalate the conflicts and for peace to prevail.
