The 1st Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis, met with a 4-member parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Korea, headed by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly KIM Young Joo. The MP Georgios Stamatis also participated in the meeting, which provided the opportunity to confirm the excellent level of friendly and cooperative relations between Greece and Korea.
Mr Ioannis Plakiotakis referred to the long-standing strong bonds of friendship between the two peoples, forged by their common struggles for freedom, democracy and peace, as illustrated by the participation of the Greek Expeditionary Force in the Korean War (1950-1953). He also stressed the two countries’ commitment to international law, making special reference to the implementation of the Convention on the Law of the Sea as a peaceful way to resolve any issues that may emerge in the relations of neighbouring countries sharing maritime borders. Furthermore, Mr Plakiotakis raised to the Korean side the issue of bureaucratic obstacles faced by Greek shipping equipment companies, as well as of Greek agricultural products, in order to enter into the Korean market. At another point in his speech, Mr Plakiotakis asked for Korea's support to Greece's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2025-2026. Closing, he welcomed the ceremonial events to honour Greece, that will be held at the Parliament of Korea, in Seoul, on 13-17 November 2023, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War (1950-1953), following an initiative of the Greek Embassy.
In turn, Mrs KIM Young Joo kindly thanked Mr Plakiotakis for his warm welcome, their meeting and the detailed briefing they received at the Parliament. As she said, further to her office as Deputy Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, she is also Chair of the Korea-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group, out of admiration for Greek history and Greek culture, but also out of gratitude for the participation of Greek soldiers in the Korean War.
