President of Parliament meets with Ambassadors and Chargés d'affaires of Arab States

The President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas met today with Ambassadors and Chargès d’affaires of Arab States to Athens.
The President of the Parliament pointed out our country’s concern over developments in the region of the Middle East. “It is a crisis with potentially far-reaching consequences for the stability of the region. In this context, Greece is worried about the possible diffusion of the war across the region. Furthermore, the increased migrant flows toward the EU constitute a potential consequence of the crisis” noted Mr Tassoulas.
The President of the Parliament went on to emphasise that “from the beginning of the crisis, Greece has recognised Israel’s right to self-defence according to International Humanitarian Law”. “All hostages must be immediately released and returned to their families. Greece, insisting on the principles of International Law, has condemned the terrorist attack committed by Hamas against civilians. Greece opposes all forms of terrorism and the use of violence against civilians” he said.
The President of the Parliament welcomed the opening of a humanitarian corridor to Gaza through Egypt, for the transport of the necessary aid. “It is important to keep this particular corridor open and to offer whatever assistance necessary to relieve the residents of the Gaza Strip” he emphasised.
Lastly, the President of the Parliament pointed out that it is important to resume negotiations on the Middle East Peace Process, with the aim of achieving a just, sustainable, comprehensive two-state solution, in accordance with International Law and the relevant UN resolutions.

The representatives of Arab States after thanking the President of the Parliament for the meeting, focused particularly on the need for the immediate cessation of hostilities and expressed their strong concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They pointed out that the International Community must put pressure on Israel to immediately stop hostilities, which risk leading to a wider crisis that will involve the entire region.
They also emphasised that the International Community should focus as soon as possible on solving the cause of the problem, with the achievement of a just two-state solution, in accordance with International Law and the UN resolutions.
