Meeting of Hellenic Parliament President with Mayor of New York City

"Greece is today one of the most reliable partners of the US", emphasised the President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas, welcoming today in Parliament the Mayor of New York City Eric Adams.

Mr Adams, who is in Athens participating in the 2022 Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism (MSAA)", was accompanied by the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyiannis, while present at the meeting was also the US Ambassador to Greece George Tsounis.

Welcoming the Mayor of New York City, "a metropolis which hosts hundreds of thousands of our compatriots", the President of the Parliament referred to the importance of the Mayors Summit taking place in Athens to "combat racial hatred, to combat antisemitism, a scourge which spread a lot of misery during WWII and which appears, in some cases, to be rearing its head, something we all must address promptly". He also pointed out that "the Greek state has put forward a comprehensive package of measures, legislative, administrative, but also educational, to fight against any form of hate speech and, obviously, antisemitism."

Mr Tassoulas referred to the importance of the Truman doctrine "which in 1947 helped Europe to stand on its feet again, and among the countries of Europe, it also helped Greece", underlining that "that Greece has never been ungrateful to the support of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, and this is why today we are one of the most reliable partners of the US".

For his part, the Mayor of NYC, after expressing his pleasure for visiting the Hellenic Parliament, pointed out that "as we look over our shoulders and look back at the ancient times of Athens, it didn't matter if it was then or now, we in government have a responsibility to move our cities and our countries to a better place".

After the meeting, the President of the Parliament accompanied the NYC Mayor to the Plenary Hall, so that he could watch part of the ongoing session on a Ministry of Health Bill regarding secondary health care.
