Deputy Chair of Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs meets with Chair of European Integration Committee of Parliament of Georgia

The Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs Stefanos Gikas met with the Chairperson of the European Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia Maka Botchorishvili, in the margins of the 35th Plenary Session of the Regional Assembly Europe of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie which was held in Athens.
The meeting took place in the positive climate created by the earlier announcement of the European Commission's recommendation to grant candidate country status to Georgia, with the final decision expected to be made by the European Council in December.
Mr Gikas congratulated Mrs Botchorishvili over Georgia’s tireless concerted efforts, moreover for making best use of experience and know-how provided by countries it addressed for assistance.
The Georgian official expressed her appreciation over the Greek support received by her country throughout the previous period, also looking forward to keeping up this supportive attitude through the strengthening of bilateral exchanges; in this respect, she stressed that Georgia is not lagging behind other countries having already received candidate country status.
The Deputy Chair emphasised that Greece, as a pillar of stability in the wider region, is firmly committed to compliance with international law provisions regarding national sovereign rights and respect for any country’s defined borders, so as not to give rise to expansionist claims from any side. In this light, he asked the Georgian Chairperson to engage in the appropriate coordination for the peacekeeping and peacemaking efforts to bear fruit.
