Parliamentary Meeting in framework of COP26

The Chairwoman of the Special Permanent Committee on Environmental Protection Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou participated as rapporteur in the panel of the parliamentary meeting of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26 31/10 – 12/11 2021).

During the discussion on “Climate finance, with special emphasis on green growth”, Mrs Avgerinopoulou stressed that funding needs to be strengthened to turn climate ambition into action.

The worrying words of the recent IPCC and UNEP reports lead everyone to take urgent action now to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. MPs can and should pave the way by legislating in favour of new green funding, thus shaping the future financial agenda. At the same time, as parliamentarians, they need to ensure a fair recovery from the pandemic, without exclusions, for all countries, developed and developing alike, and especially for the most vulnerable segments of the population.

Mrs Avgerinopoulou referred extensively to the National Resilience and Recovery Plan “Greece 2.0”, mentioning especially the Greek agenda of green funding for the climate, as it was presented by the Prime Minister at the Conference and reflected in successful actions taken by the Parliament’s Committee on Environmental Protection.

Lastly, it should be noted that concerning the outcome document of the Inter-parliamentary Discussion in Glasgow, the proposal made by the Greek parliamentary delegation to add the following phrase, was accepted: “to make additional funds available to support investments in science and research, promoting carbon dioxide sequestration, storage and conversion technologies, as effective means to mitigate climate change”.
