OECD Global Parliamentary Network meeting on “Building a secure and inclusive digital future in a post-COVID world”

The decisive steps that Greece has taken during the last three years, in order to build a strong legal framework to limit the spread of fake news, hate content and aggressive speech, were presented by Kostas Karagounis, a member of the Committee on Public Order, Public Administration and Justice, at the OECD Global Parliamentary Network meeting on “Building a secure and inclusive digital future in a post-COVID world” which took place in Riga, 30 June – 1 July.

Mr Karagounis, a keynote speaker on the first day of the meeting, focused on the challenges of the time regarding digital security, the fight against digital disinformation, as well as on legislation in the new digital era and stressed that it is an essential and continuous choice for Greece to promote equality before the law and to eliminate all forms of discrimination. The Greek MP underlined that close cooperation with our allies in order to strengthen our chances of success in the ongoing battle is of particular importance, since the coordination of responses to large scale cyber-attacks is still a major challenge for effective international cooperation in cyber-security ecosystem.

Lastly, Mr Karagounis mentioned that in December 2020 Greece approved a new national cyber security strategy (NCSS) for 2020-2025, placing great emphasis on achieving resilience in cyberspace, advocating the development of a national risk assessment framework and national emergency planning.
