Participation of Hellenic Parliament in 60th Session of Economic, Commercial and Financial Affairs Committee of Parliamentary Assembly of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC)

Today, Friday, April 7th, took place the 60th Session of the Economic, Commercial and Financial Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC) in Athens, via teleconference. In the proceedings of the Committee participated the MPs Maria-Alexandra Kefala and Olympia Teligioridou, as well as the other delegations of the member countries of the Assembly.

The main subject of discussion of the meeting was the Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Energy Security in the BSEC Member States.

In her intervention, Mrs Kefala highlighted the drastic increase in energy prices due to a combination of economic, political and geopolitical factors. She then stressed that in 2022 the situation in the energy sector presented several challenges for Greece, such as the immediate decoupling from imported fossil fuels and the management of high energy prices. To address these challenges, the country took a series of actions, including measures to maintain affordable electricity prices, to promote further critical energy infrastructure and to implement agreements with neighbouring countries in order to ensure energy supply, as well as to accelerate the green transition. Furthermore, she noted that the development of Renewable Energy Sources in the country, for example wind farms, is a decentralised form of energy production. Concluding, she stated that it is important for the member countries of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation to establish strategic partnerships in order to address energy crises and challenges such as the ones we are currently facing.
