Hellenic parliament delegation at Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) – Results of election of Secretary General

The proceedings of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Istanbul from 15 to 19 April, have been concluded. The election of the Union’s new Secretary General, who will succeed Martin Chungong upon the expiry of his term next June, was at the centre of the Assembly’s agenda.

Ms Anda Filip was elected as the new Secretary General of the IPU, securing 72% of the votes in the Governing Council. Her election marks a historic milestone for the Union, as she is the first woman to assume the office in its 137 years of operation.

The Greek candidacy of MP Dr Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou was also significant, ranking second in the election process. She was followed by Ms Cecilia Widegren from Sweden and Ms Fatou Dieng Thiam from Senegal. This ranking reflects the recognition of Greece’s active role within the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
