NATO PA Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group holds meeting at Hellenic Parliament
The Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group (GSM) of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) is holding a meeting in Athens on 8 and 9 November, with the participation of MPs Spilios Livanos, Head of the Greek delegation to the NATO PA and NATO PA Vice-President, Manousos Voloudakis, Deputy Chair of the GSM and chair of the meeting and Andreas Loverdos, member, as well as of parliamentariasn from the 30 NATO PA member countries.
The following issues are on the agenda:
- Security in the Mediterranean basin and the MENA region
- Shifting geopolitical dynamics in the MENA region
- Defence challenges and border security
- Greek perspectives on the challenges to the Southern Flank of NATO
- The migration crisis and refugee flows
- Europe's energy crisis
- The contribution of Greece to energy security
Participants will hear from the Greek side through the following speakers:
- Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, Minister of National Defence
- Notis Mitarakis, Minister of Migration Policy and Asylum
- Giannis Plakiotakis, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy
- Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of European Affairs
- Dr Thanos Dokos, National Security Advisor, Office of the Prime Minister
- Dr Panayotis Tsakonas, Professor of International Relations, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
- Dimitris Tsalemis, General Director on Energy, Environment and Energy Ministry
The Special Group will also elect the new GSM bureau.
