Deputy-Chair of Special Standing Committee on European Affairs meets with Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs of Albania
The Deputy Chair of the Special Standing Committee on European Affairs Dimitris Kairidis met today at the Parliament with the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs of Albania Elisa Spiropali.
During the meeting Mr Kairidis referred to the long-standing relations between the two countries characterised by sincere friendship, as well as to the bilateral and regional cooperation, of utmost importance for ensuring prosperity and stability in the region. He pointed out the unwavering support of Greece for Albania's European prospect, recalling the Thessaloniki Summit of 2003, which was the starting point for the integration of the countries of the Western Balkans into the EU. The Deputy Chair also mentioned the nationalist forces that lurk in the region and distract from the positive steps that have been taken, as well as to external actors, outside the EU, in the region of SE Europe, who interfere in the process of the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone, in order to stall it. He then emphasised the value of Albania maintaining a Western orientation and welcomed the adoption of secondary legislation regarding the protection of national minorities in the neighbouring country, urging the country to adopt the other implementing laws, in accordance with European standards. Lastly, he added the importance of completing the population census, which would accelerate Albania's accession process, allowing the country's prosperity to be uninterrupted, especially since the concept of enlargement has acquired, for the countries of the North as well, a new dimension, due to the circumstances.
The Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Elisa Spiropali expressed her gratitude for Greece's support to the country's goal of European integration and stated that Albania's strong political will towards the aforementioned goal is actively demonstrated through its commitment to the harmonisation of its legislation with that of the EU, in accordance with the relevant instructions. She noted the remarkable progress achieved in her country regarding digitasation, especially of the cadastre, with a view to full digital records by 2024.
