Meeting of Chairwoman of Special Permanent Committee on Environmental Protection with Ambassador of People's Republic of China in Athens

The prospects of cooperation in the field of green growth and renewable energy sources, the development of technological innovations to address the climate crisis and the further development of business exchanges in the field of agri-food, such as olive oil and wine, were discussed at the work meeting which was held at the Hellenic Parliament, on Thursday 17 February, between the Chairwoman of the Special Permanent Committee on Environmental Protection and New Democracy MP for the constituency of Ilia Dr Dionysia Theodora Avgerinopoulou and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Athens Xiao Junzheng. 

At the meeting, which took place on the initiative of Mrs Avgerinopoulou, an extensive reference was made to issues of education, the ancient Greek culture and the spirit of Olympism. The Chairwoman of the Committee informed the Ambassador on the upcoming establishment by the Ministry of Education of a Centre of International Academic Studies, which will host programmes by Greek and foreign Universities in ancient Olympia, Delphi and Sparta, and asked the mediation of the Ambassador to invite Chinese Universities. 

The two interlocutors referred to the cultural relations between the two countries and peoples, emphasising Olympism, as well as the 50th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic relations between them, expressing their satisfaction and pledging to intensify cooperation in all fields. 

The Chairwomen invited to our country the 44 children from China who sang the Olympic Anthem in Greek at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, so that they may be hosted in Greece and introduced to Greek education and culture. 

Finally, the Chairwoman, on behalf of the Hellenic Parliament, presented th Ambassador with the gift of a case with 2 bronze coins featuring Eleftherios Venizelos and the Averoff Battleship, which were issued on the occasion of the celebration by the Hellenic Parliament of the 90 years since the Balkan Wars, while the Ambassador presented the Chairwoman with souvenirs fro the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
