President of Parliament at presentation of Global Centre of Pontian Hellenism

The official presentation of the plan to build the Global Centre of Pontian Hellenism of Sourmena at the former airport of Athens (“Elliniko”) took place in the presence of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Cultural Conference Centre “Mikis Theodorakis”. The project is exclusively financed by Mr Spyros Latsis.

The President of the Parliament Constantine Tassoulas delivered an address and referred to the epic of Pontian Hellenism, which “turned destruction into triumph” by teaching how an unfathomable challenge can turn into the will to live and the power to create.

Congratulating the contributors of this great monumental and architectural project, which aspires to become a point of reference for Pontian Greeks worldwide, he stressed:

“The Global Centre of Pontian Hellenism will not just bring Pontian Greeks from around the world closer to each other, but it will also acquaint the world with a strong example of how hardship, how an unbelievable challenge can turn into an epic. And that we ought to not only honour this epic, but also emulate it.”

“This Centre – he added – will house the expectations, dreams, ambitions of the new Greece, which is gradually leaving behind its most recent challenge, yet another one, to move forward, as did after their own unnfathomable one our Pontian ancestors”.

Mr Tassoulas congratulated Lamda Development S.A. for financing this investment of national value, the competent ministers of Development and Investment, Culture and Finance for the successful completion of the relevant agreement, as well as the Mayor of Elliniko and Argiroupolis for the initiative to build the Centre.

“It was an odyssey that lasted less than ten years. A welcome odyssey which proved that when there is cooperation and understanding, things can move forward in Greece. As President of the Hellenic Parliament, which since 1994 has passed a law recognising and honouring the memory of the Pontian Genocide, every year on the 19th of May, I feel moved, proud and fully satisfied to be at the presentation of this Centre which conveys the message to the world that Greeks can turn a hardship, an unbelievable challenge into something uplifting, as did the Pontians” underlined the President of the Parliament.

The following spoke at the event: The Mayor of Elliniko and Argyroupolis Ioannis Konstantatos, the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Minister of Development and Investment Adonis Georgiadis, the President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas, the CEO of Lamda Development S.A. Odisseas Athanasiou, the President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA), US Senator Leonidas Raptakis and the Chairman of the Association of Pontians of Sourmena Giorgos Sarafidis. The event was coordinated by journalist Haris Pasvantidis.
