Inter-parliamentary meeting on "Universal jurisdiction - improving accountability for serious international crimes"

An inter-parliamentary meeting on the subject of international jursidiction and the need to improve accountability for serious international crimes was held today by the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by MP Dionysia Avgerinopoulou.

Mrs Avgerinopoulou, during her intervention, argued, inter alia, that penalisation, punishment and actions to prevent war crimes have become an acquis of European penal legal culture, and of the global one as well, culminating in the establishment and operation of the International Criminal Court.

Greece, she added, supports the operation of this important international judicial body for the criminal prosecution of persons accused of the most serious crimes on a global scale, such as genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including environmental crimes. She also said that the International Criminal Court needs to be further reinforced with manpower, especially in light of recent developments.

As chairwoman of the Parliament's Environment Committee, she did not fail to mention that possible environmental war crimes in Ukraine should also be investigated by the International Criminal Court, since their consequences, if said crimes have been committed, not only affect the national space of Ukraine, but also neighbouring countries, including the Greek territory.
