Parliament marks day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity
The Hellenic Parliament since 2008 has designated as the Day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity the 19th of April, the day Lord Byron died in 1824 in Missolonghi. This is also why the historical anniversary exhibition "Beholding Liberty! At the Hellenic Parliament, two centuries later" was inaugurated on precisely the 19th of April 2021.
Lord Byron (George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron), having actively help in the Greek liberation struggle, became a symbol of Philhellenism. The Exhibition "Beholding Liberty! At the Hellenic Parliament, two centuries later" includes a special thematic section on Byron and overall 17 Byronic items (manuscripts, books, works of art), while from July 20221 and until February 2022 Ludovico Lipparini's emblematic painting "Lord Byron swears an oath at the grave of Markos Botsaris" had been hosted for the first and only time in an exhibition.
The Hellenic Parliament honours Philhellenes in the person of people all over the world who love Greece and Hellenism, people who promote the values of the Greek spirit. At the same time it commends the value of International Solidarity to the just demands of the people for freedom, independence, justice and democracy.
The Exhibition "Beholding Liberty! At the Hellenic Parliament, two centuries later" will remain open in 2022.
