"On the occasion of your election as President of the European Parliament, I wish to extend to you both personally and on behalf of the members of the Hellenic Parliament our warmest congratulations and to wish you every success in your High Office.
I am certain that from your position you will contribute substantially to the reinforcement of the role of the European Parliament as the guardian of democratic values, the Rule of Law and human rights.
Allow me to express my deepest hope that the Conference on the Future of Europe will set the foundations for more intensive efforts to strengthen cooperation between member states.Today, more than ever, we need to come closer to our citizens and provide them with solid answers on questions related to convergence and cohesion, unemployment and poverty, management of terrorism and migratory flows.
I am conscious of your similar concerns on these issues. I would like also to highlight that you have expressed your political view on the indivisibility of Europe that only a Cyprus without Turkish occupation forces can ensure, as you rightly underlined in your speech on taking up your duties. I can assure you that the Greek people attach the greatest value to your views as President of the European Parliament.
Allow me to express, Honourable President, the assurances of my highest consideration."
