Workshop on strengthening role of parliamentarians from Member States of International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) in Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Process

The two-day workshop organised jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) concluded today in Geneva. The aim of the workshop was to strengthen the role of parliamentarians in implementing the recommendations formulated by the UN Human Rights Council after examining the report on the human rights situation in each country.

The workshop was attended by MPs from 15 member parliaments of La Francophonie and in particular MPs-members of committees or other parliamentary structures responsible for human rights. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by MPs Nikolaos-Vassileios Ypsilantis and Irini Kassimati

The work of the workshop was structured around the following sessions:

  • General assessment of international mechanisms for human rights

  • The contribution of parliamentarians to the Universal Periodic Review Process

  • Provisions for the better management of human rights

In the debate between the MPs which followed, Mr Ypsilantis took the floor and said that Greece participates in the UPR process mainly through the relevant Ministries, while the participation of the Parliament has been, so far, limited. He noted, however, that following this very interesting workshop to strengthen the role of parliamentarians from OIF members states in the UPR process, he will suggest for the relevant permanent parliamentary committee to follow the process, so that the Hellenic Parliament can exercise control and systematically monitor our country's adaptation to the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review.
