Hellenic Parliament Library participates in celebration of International Archives Day

With an educational visit by 20 students of the Department of Archival, Library and Information Studies of the University of West Attica, the Hellenic Parliament Library participated in the celebration of the International Archives Day.

The presentation of the Parliament Library, with an analysis of the important work it carries out, was made during the event launch by the Deputy Head of the Directorate on the Parliament Library Athena Synarelli. Mr Yannis Stoyannidis, Assistant Professor of the Department, who accompanied the students, elaborated on the theoretical framework for the management of active and historical archives and referred to the principles of organising an archival service. A presentation on the experience and the practices for managing the Parliament's archives, with a presentation of original documents, was made by the Head of the Department Angeliki Karapanou and members of the staff of the Department of Parliamentary Archives.

The 9th of June was designated International Archives Day in 2007, to commemorate the date the International Council on Archives was created on 9 June 1948 under the auspices of UNESCO. The celebration seeks to raise awareness among the public on the importance of archives, but also among decision-making bodies and public and private organisations, on the need for long-term archival preservation and access. Furthermore, the International Day showcases unique and extremely rare documents preserved in archival institutions.
