Meeting of Hellenic Parliament President with Secretary General of Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy: International Scretariat to meet in Corfu

"I briefed the President of the Hellenic Parliament on the IAO International Secretariat  upcoming meeting , which will take place next month in our country, in Corfu, but also on our activity in recent months, despite the pandemic restrictions. I thanked him once again for the support that he personally and the Hellenic Parliament provide to our work". The above were stated by the IAO Secretary General Maximos Harakopoulos, after his meeting with the President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas.

Mr. Harakopoulos informed Mr. Tassoulas about the decision to hold the IAO International Secretariat meeting in Greece on December 10-12, honouring the Greek Revolution 200-year anniversary. In his words, "following a proposal by our Russian partners and since this year we also celebrate the Greek-Russia Year of History, the meeting will take place in Corfu, where the tomb of the first Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias, - who was Tsarist Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs  - is located".

Mr. Harakopoulos also briefed the President of the Hellenic Parliament on the contacts of the ΙΑΟ with the leadership of the World Muslim League in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and particularly the cooperation contacts they recently had with a delegation of Muslims that visited the Hellenic Parliament.

Finally, he thanked him for his valuable contribution to the publication of the volume on the Hagia Sophia temples around the world, but also the volume dedicated to the Mount Athos orthodox presence during the years of Ottoman rule (1430-1912), which are high-quality publications, printed by the Parliament’s printing house.

The President of the Hellenic Parliament expressed his thanks for the information and encouraged the IAO intercultural dialogue initiatives, aimed at the peaceful coexistence of peoples with different religions. Mr. Tassoulas congratulated the IAO Head for the selection of Greece as the upcoming meeting’s host country, in the framework of the Independence Struggle's 200 year anniversary. Moreover, he assured Mr. Harakopoulos that the Hellenic Parliament, both as IAO founding member, but also as the inter-parliamentary institution’s seat, will continue in every way to support its multifaceted actions.
