President of Parliament meets with Governing Board of World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association

The President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas welcomed today to the Parliament the Governing Board of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA), under its President, Rhode Island State Senator Leonidas Raptakis.

Welcoming the WHIA Governing Board to the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Tassoulas described the Association's mission as "national", warmly thanking the members of the diaspora, who, in their respective legislative bodies around the globe, "support the national goals of the motherland". As he emphasised, "on all national issues, on the Cyprus issue, Turkish provocations, the Parthenon Marbles, the vote of Greeks abroad and on many other issues, you have always helped our national goals, with your resolutions, your intervention and your positive impact".

For his part, WHIA President Leonidas Raptakis underlined that the Association's members follow developments closely, in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean and neighbouring Turkey's stance, making efforts to help the Greek people by "forming a bridge between Greece and the countries where we are elected", as he said.

The excellent collaboration between the Hellenic Parliament and the WHIA was also emphasised by the Chairman of the Special Permanent Committe of Greeks Abroad Savvas Anastasiadis. As he pointed out, the visits by the members of the diaspora that take place from time to time in various parts of the country "serve to bolster the patriotic, national morale of Greeks, when they see MPs of Greek descent elected in foreign parliament supporting the efforts and security of our country against the provocations by our neighbour that we are facing".

Present in the meeting were also the following: Stephan Pappas, Wyoming State Senator, Maria Tzanakis-Collett, Pennsylvania State Senator, Steve Georganas, Australian MP and Annie Koutrakis, Canadian MP.
