Inter-parliamentary Conference in Zagreb on contribution of national parliaments to improving the Common Agricultural Policy
An Inter-Parliamentary Conference on the “contribution of national parliaments to improving the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)” took place today in Zagreb, organised by the Croatian Parliament. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by the Vice-President of the Standing Committee on Production and Trade Fotini Arampatzi.
The three thematic sections were the following:
1. Challenges and opportunities of the CAP
2. Declaration on GMO-free Alps-Adriatic-Danube region and review of the proposals for new regulations concerning plants obtained by new genomic techniques and the production and marketing of plant reproductive material and
3. National parliaments’ initiatives
Mrs Arampatzi referred to the recent disasters that took place in Greece, and pointed out the need to increase funds in order to deal with the climate crisis, as well as the need to adapt our national strategic plan to the new conditions that prevail in flood and fire affected areas. She emphasised the importance of reviewing the rules applicable to agricultural production in order to further strengthen risk management in agriculture, with measures to help reduce the impact of the climate crisis. Finally, she stressed the need to invest in research and innovative and sustainable technologies to help the agricultural sector attract new farmers who will settle and invest in rural areas, thus ensuring the sustainability of the sector.
