President of Hellenic Parliament meets with new Ambassador of People's Republic of China

The President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas met today with the new Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Athens Xiao Junzheng. During the meeting, they reviewed Greece - China relations and the prospects for their further improvement, as well as relations between the Hellenic Parliament and the National People's Congress of China. This issue will be discussed extensively next Tuesday during an online discussion between the President of the Hellenic Parliament and the Speaker of the National People's Congress of China, on the occasion of the 50- year anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The following statements were made after the meeting:

President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas:

"Today we had the pleasure and honour to welcome to the Hellenic Parliament the new Ambassador of the People's Republic of China and have a very interesting discussion on bilateral and general issues, in the presence of Mr Ioannis Tragakis who is the Chair of the Hellenic Parliament's Greece-China Friendship Group. Obviously, we shared views on the issue distressing the world community because of its serious impact, that is, Russia's barbaric invasion of Ukraine. We then referred to the great prospects for further improvement of existing relations between Greece and China in many sectors, such as trade, culture and educational exchanges, together with the strengthening of cooperation between the Parliaments of the two countries; we also discussed the upcoming conversation that I will have online on Tuesday, May 24, with the President of the National People's Congress of China, on the occasion -in early June- of the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. I also had the opportunity to comment on China’s stance -as a large country and member of the UN Security Council- on Southeast European issues, always firmly in favour of the concerned parties’ territorial integrity and sovereignty. Regarding the Cyprus issue, as a member of the Security Council, China advocates a viable and lasting solution on the basis of the Security Council resolutions and obviously not the solution of the de facto island’s partition and two states pursued by the other party concerned."

Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Athens Xiao Junzheng:

"As two ancient civilisations, China and Greece have a long history running through the depths of centuries; our two peoples have always valued each other and have helped each other in difficult times. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary from the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Greece. The China-Greece year of culture and tourism is progressing smoothly. We hope that exchanges of views between the National People's Congress of China and the Hellenic Parliament can further contribute to the development of the overall strategic partnership between China and Greece. "

The meeting was attended by the Chair of the Hellenic Parliament Greece-China Friendship Group IoannisTragakis and the Diplomatic Advisor of the Parliament Ambassador Constantine Economidis.
