Exhibitions
As of 1994 the Parliament has been making a systematic effort to come closer to the citizens and mostly the youth by organizing exhibitions on the occasion of important historical events or to pay tribute to distinguished personalities of Hellenism. By means of such events, the Parliament actually contributes to helping citizens get a more profound knowledge of history and adopt a more critical stance towards the past and the present.
Moreover, groups of visitors, such as members of associations, senior citizen clubs etc. may schedule a visit by calling the Parliament (210 3692429 and 210 3692106).

“Hellas: genius loci”
The Hellenic Parliament Library presents at the ‘Peristylion’ of the Parliament Building the exhibition “Hellas: genius loci”.
Works of art (paintings and engravings) from the Hellenic Parliament Art Collection are exhibited along with illustrated books from the Library’s rare books collections, depicting historical sites and antiquities of Greece, as these were presented by European travelers, antiquarians, architects, illustrators, as well as by modern Greek painters.
When a place has been associated with myth and history, then a particular spirit of the place (genius loci) is created, which sets its seal in perpetuity on anything related to this place. In many parts of Greece, history has endowed the landscape with a spiritual character. The ancient monuments, as bearers of historical memory, remind the visitor of the cultural values generated and nourished by the ancient Greek civilization: liberty and democracy, arts and letters.
In direct relation to travelling and antiquarianism, numerous artists have pictured and presented ancient Greek art to the European public as a model, and the historically charged landscape of Greece as ideal. This phenomenon was already standardized by the end of the 17th century, flourished during the 18th and was widely spread during the 19th century, contributing greatly to adoration for antiquity and Classicism, so characteristic of the modern European civilization.
The exhibition “Greece: genius loci” is being organized by the Hellenic Parliament Library in collaboration with the Museum of the City of Athens, within the context of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union (January-June 2014). It has been inaugurated by the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Evangelos- Vasileios I. Meimarakis, on January 27, 2014 and will last until June 30, 2014.
