World Parliamentary Day – 136th Anniversary of founding of Inter-Parliamentary Union

On Sunday, June 29, the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will convene under the auspices of the Hellenic Parliament for the first time in Ilia, Greece. Mrs Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, MP for Ilia, Chair of the Special Permanent Committee on the Environment of the Hellenic Parliament, and member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, is an elected member of the Executive Committee.

This important international meeting will host MPs - members of the IPU from all over the world. Among the distinguished participants are Mr Martin Chungong (Cameroon), Secretary-General of the Union; Mr Godswill Obot Akpabio, Speaker of the Nigerian Parliament; Mrs Cynthia Lopez Castro (Mexico), President of the IPU Bureau of Women Parliamentarians; Mrs Nour Abu Ghoush (Jordan), President of the IPU Forum of Young Parliamentarians; and Mr Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, representing all geopolitical groups of the Union.

A special ceremony will take place on Monday, June 30, celebrating the International Day of Parliamentarism, coinciding this year with the 136th anniversary of the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The event will be held at the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia. The main theme of the event is Gender Equality, as reflected in the Union’s 2025 campaign, focusing on promoting equality in parliaments, encouraging institutions that consider gender perspectives, and combating violence and discrimination based on gender.

The event will be attended by His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios II of Ilia and Oleni, members of the Greek delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union Mr Dimitrios Avramopoulos, Head of the delegation, and Mrs Christina Alexopoulou, the MPs from the Ilia region as well as Mr Haris Tsolakis, President of the International Olympic Academy, Mr Nektarios Farmakis, Regional Governor of Western Greece, Deputy Governors of Ilia, Mayors of Ilia and numerous local authorities and organisations.

On Tuesday, July 1st, the distinguished participants will hold a courtesy meeting with the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Nikitas Kaklamanis, at the Parliament Building, in the presence of MPs – members of the Greek delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
